Fox’s American Idol wins easily.

Fox finished in first place for the evening with an 18.8/28 household rating, 33.56 million total viewers and a 13.9/34 rating among adults 18-49.

  • Last Week:
    • Households – 20.2/30 rating [#1]
    • Viewers – 36.87 million [#1]
    • A18-49 – 15.4/36 rating [#1]
  • 8:00 to 10:00 p.m.: The second day of American Idol’s new season (20.2/30 HH rating, 36.87M viewers, 15.4/36 A18-49) continued to dominate, pacing ahead of last season’s comparable episode.  Declines were still present of less than 10% across the board, but it’s really not too significant when dealing with such high numbers.  One thing that is plainly evident, and was so last week as well, is that the show performs much better in its 9:00 p.m. time-period than it does in its 8:00 time-period (17.3/27 HH rating vs. 20.4/30 HH rating, 30.36M viewers vs. 36.76M viewers, 12.2/32 A18-49 rating vs. 15.7/37 A18-49 rating).
    • Week-to-week numbers:
      • Households – 20.2/30 to 18.8/28
      • Viewers – 36.87M to 33.56M
      • A18-49 – 15.4/36 to 13.9/34

CBS followed in second place for the evening with a 6.2/10 household rating, 9.25 million total viewers but was third among adults 18-49 with a 2.5/6 rating.

  • Last Week:
    • Households –7.1/11 rating [#2]
    • Viewers –11.07 million [#2]
    • A18-49 –3.1/7 rating [#2]
  • 8:00 p.m.: A new Armed & Famous (3.2/5 HH rating, 4.75M viewers, 1.4/4 A18-49 rating) was down again, this time even more so than the week prior as it shed 1.35M viewers, and was off 18% among households and 26% among adults 18-49.  This one shouldn’t be around for much longer.
    • Week-to-week numbers:
      • Households – 3.9/6 to 3.2/5
      • Viewers – 6.10M to 4.75M
      • A18-49 – 1.9/5 to 1.4/4
  • 9:00 p.m.: A repeat of Criminal Minds (6.5/10 HH rating, 9.60M viewers, 2.3/5 A18-49 rating) did respectable numbers for the Eye.
  • 10:00 p.m.: A new CSI: NY (9.0/13 HH rating, 13.41M viewers, 3.8/10 A18-49 rating) ended the evening on a high note for the network, as it was the hours top-rated program among all main categories and was relatively flat from the week prior.  It is worth noting however that the series is off a bit from its higher ratings (especially among adults 18-49) it had been recieving a few weeks back.  Perhaps the reduced power of its lead-in (which is losing audience to AI, most importantly the A18-49 crowd) is hurting the show a bit.  It’ll surely be interesting to see how the Lost vs. CSI matchup turns out in just a few more weeks.
    • Week-to-week numbers:
      • Households – 8.9/14 to 9.0/13
      • Viewers – 13.69M to 13.41M
      • A18-49 – 4.1/10 to 3.8/10

NBC finished in third place for the evening with a 5.3/8 household rating and 8.21 million total viewers, but was a stronger second place among adults 18-49 with a 2.6/7 rating.

  • Last Week:
    • Households – 5.0/8 rating [#3]
    • Viewers – 7.41 million [#3]
    • A18-49 – 2.2/5 rating [#3]
  • 8:00 p.m.: A new Friday Night Lights (3.9/6 HH rating, 5.91M viewers, 1.9/5A18-49 rating) unfortunately was down from where it left off two weeks back, no doubt due at least in some part to the AI ratings juggernaut.  The most significant decline occured among adults 18-49 where the freshman drama was off a disapointing 21%.
    • Episode-to-episode numbers (1/10/2007):
      • Households – 4.4/7 to 3.9/6
      • Viewers – 6.41M to 5.91M
      • A18-49 – 2.4/6 to 1.9/5
  • 9:00 p.m.: A new edition of Deal or No Deal (6.3/9 HH rating, 10.05M viewers, 2.7/6 A18-49 rating) perked up some after a bad performance last week, posting gains of 1.37M viewers, 11% among households and 17% among adults 18-49.
    • Week-to-week numbers:
      • Households – 5.7/8 to 6.3/9
      • Viewers – 8.68M to 10.05M
      • A18-49 – 2.3/5 to 2.7/6
  • 10:00 p.m.: A new Medium (5.8/10 HH rating, 8.92M viewers, 3.1/8 A18-49 rating) was even from the week prior, and though it lost some of its lead-ins overall audience did manage to gain 15% among adults 18-49
    • Week-to-week numbers:
      • Households – 6.0/10 to 5.8/10
      • Viewers – 8.92M to 8.67M
      • A18-49 – 3.1/8 to 3.1/8

ABC followed in fourth place for the evening with a 4.0/6 household rating, 6.06 million total viewers and a 2.1/5 rating among adults 18-49.

  • Last Week:
    • Households – 4.0/6 rating [#4]
    • Viewers – 6.06 million [#4]
    • A18-49 – 2.1/5 rating [#4]
  • 8:00 & 8:30 p.m.: The season premiere of George Lopez (4.1/6 HH rating, 6.13M viewers, 1.9/5 A18-49 rating) got off to a decent start (when compared to the same time frame, see numbers below) while a new According to Jim (4.1/6 HH rating, 6.24M viewers, 2.1/5 A18-49 rating) was able to stay consistent with its performance from the week prior.
    • Season Premiere Numbers (George Lopez, 1 hour–10/5/2005)
      • Households – 6.1/10 to 4.1/6
      • Viewers – 9.13M to 6.13M
      • A18-49 – 3.6/8 to 1.9/5
    • Year-to-year Numbers (George Lopez–1/25/2006)
      • Households – 4.2/7 to 4.1/6
      • Viewers – 5.83M to 6.13M
      • A18-49 – 2.1/6 to 1.9/5
    • Week-to-week numbers (According to Jim):
      • Households – 4.3/7 to 4.1/6
      • Viewers – 6.89M to 6.24M
      • A18-49 – 2.2/5 to 2.1/5
  • 9:00 & 9:30 p.m.: Unfortunately the fourth week of Knights of Prosperity (2.4/4 HH rating, 3.58M viewers, 1.4/3 A18-49 rating) and In Case of Emergency (2.1/3 HH rating, 2.98M viewers, 1.2/3 A18-49 rating) continued a downward turn to series low ratings.
    • Week-to-week numbers: (Knights of Prosperity)
      • Households – 4.4/7 to 3.3/5 to 2.6/4 to 2.4/4
      • Viewers – 7.18M to 5.27M to 3.91M to 3.58M
      • A18-49 – 3.0/7 to 2.2/5 to 1.4/3 to 1.4/3
    • Week-to-week numbers: (In Case of Emergency)
      • Households – 3.9/6 to 4.0/6 to 2.2/3 to 2.1/3
      • Viewers – 6.29M to 5.81M to 3.43M to 2.98M
      • A18-49 – 2.7/7 to 2.3/6 to 1.4/3 to 1.2/3
  • 10:00 p.m.: An edition of Primetime: Medical Mysteries (3.9/6 HH rating, 5.76M viewers, 2.1/6 A18-49 rating) ended an overall poor evening for ABC, shedding 1.86M viewers, 25% of its households and 22% of its A18-49 crowd.  It’s hard to believe that so many weeks ago, it was being said that ABC would be able to come away with the A18-49 crowd this television season.  But they’ve had a pretty poor midseason and I’m sure can’t wait for Lost to come back and perhaps jumpstart it back up a bit.
    • Week-to-week numbers:
      • Households – 5.2/8 to 3.9/6
      • Viewers – 7.62M to 5.76M
      • A18-49 – 2.7/7 to 2.1/6

The CW finished in fifth place with a 1.8/3 household rating, 2.66 million total viewers and a 1.2/3 rating among adults 18-49.

  • Last Week:
    • Households – 1.8/3 rating [#5]
    • Viewers – 2.66 million [#5]
    • A18-49 – 1.2/3 rating [#5]
  • 8:00 p.m.: A new Beauty and the Geek (1.9/3 HH rating, 3.07M viewers, 1.3/3 A18-49 rating) did okay in its third week, but its still way off from where it began the season.  Performance was better in the key demo The CW goes after, A18-34.
    • Week-to-week numbers:
      • Households – 2.6/4 to 2.1/3 to 1.9/3
      • Viewers – 3.94M to 3.13M to 3.07M
      • A18-49 – 2.0/5 to 1.5/4 to 1.3/3
  • 9:00 p.m.: The CW followed up with a new One Tree Hill (1.6/2 HH rating, 2.26M viewers, 0.9/2 A18-49 rating) and got another dismal performance, though it doesn’t seem like it’s going to go any lower.  AI is really hurting this show.
    • Week-to-week numbers:
      • Households – 2.7/5 to 1.6/2 to 1.6/2
      • Viewers – 4.24M to 2.18 to 2.26M
      • A18-49 – 1.9/5 to 1.0/2 to 0.9/2
