CBS remained steady week-to-week, winning the night overall among households and viewers, and securing a tie for first among adults 18-49.

CBS finished in first place for the evening with a 5.4/9 household rating/share and 8.15 million viewers and was tied for first among adults 18-49 with a 2.1/6 rating/share among adults 18-49.

  • Last Week
    • 5.5/10 HH Rating [#1]
    • 8.32M Viewers [#1]
    • 2.2/7 A18-49 Rating [#1]
  • 7:00 p.m.: 60 Minutes (6.4/12 HH rating/share, 9.63M viewers, 1.8/6 A18-49 rating/share) lost some of its weekly viewership, but remained strong overall, placing first for the hour among households and viewers, and just narrowly losing out to ABC’s America’s Funniest Home Videos in the key A18-49 demo.
    • Week-to-week numbers (fast nationals):
      • Households – 6.7/13 to 6.4/12
      • Viewers – 10.01M to 9.63M
      • Adults 18-49 – 2.1/8 to 1.8/6
  • 8:00 p.m.: Big Brother 8 (4.8/8 HH rating/share, 7.62M viewers, 2.9/8 A18-49 rating/share) continued its consistent growth from lead-in performance, and even managed to improve its A18-49 performance from the week prior, this all despite losing a slight amount of its total audience.
    • Week-to-week numbers (fast nationals):
      • Households – 5.2/9 to 4.8/8
      • Viewers – 8.17M to 7.62M
      • Adults 18-49 – 2.8/9 to 2.9/8
  • As you can see from the numbers below for the remaining two hours of CBS programming, the new duo of Cold Case and Shark (which is moving from its Thursday’s at 10:00 p.m. time slot to this time slot) look to be quite compatible with each other. CBS shouldn’t hurt much next year with this new pairing.
  • 9:00 p.m.: A repeat of Cold Case (5.5/9 HH rating/share, 8.14M viewers, 1.9/5 A18-49 rating/share).
  • 10:00 p.m.: A repeat of Shark (5.1/9 HH rating/share, 7.23M viewers, 1.8/5 A18-49 rating/share).

NBC followed in second place for the evening with a 4.2/7 household rating/share, 6.25 million viewers and a 2.0/6 rating/share among adults 18-49.

  • Last Week:
    • 3.7/7 HH Rating [#2]
    • 5.35M Viewers [#2]

  • 7:00 p.m.: NBC’s presentation of the U.S. championships of Gymnastics (3.0/5 HH rating/share, 4.48M viewers, 1.2/4 A18-49 rating/share) were not able to match the numbers NBC usually gets in this time slot from Dateline. As you can see from last week’s numbers, which I’ve posted below, the hour was off by 1.19 million or 23% among viewers, 21% among households and 20% among adults 18-49.
    • Last week’s numbers (fast nationals – Dateline):
      • Households – 3.9/7
      • Viewers – 5.67M
      • Adults 18-49 – 1.5/6
  • 8:00-11:00 p.m.: Though its lead-in was weaker than usual, the NFL preseason edition of Sunday Night Football (4.6/8 HH rating/share, 6.84M viewers, 2.3/6 A18-49 rating/share) between the New York Giants (Away) and the Baltimore Ravens (Home) managed to increase its overall audience and demo numbers from the week prior, posting much needed increases of 1.59 million or 30% among viewers, 28% among households and 30% among adults 18-49.
    • Week-to-week numbers (fast nationals – Seattle Seahawks at San Diego Chargers):
      • Households – 3.6/6 to 4.6/8
      • Viewers – 5.25M to 6.84M
      • Adults 18-49 – 1.6/5 to 2.3/6

ABC finished in third place for the evening with a 3.4/6 household rating/share and 5.30 million viewers, but was fourth among adults 18-49 with a 1.7/5 rating/share.

  • Last Week:
    • 3.2/6 HH Rating [#3]
    • 4.98M Viewers [#3]
    • 1.6/5 A18-49 Rating [#t3]
  • ABC’s fortunes have changed somewhat over the past few Sunday nights, as the network has been posting much improved numbers in the 7:00-9:00 p.m. time period with America’s Funniest Home Videos and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. These improvements allow you to somewhat overlook the very low ratings of Desperate Housewives and Brothers & Sisters.
  • 7:00 p.m.: A repeat of America’s Funniest Home Videos (4.0/7 HH rating/share, 6.52M viewers, 1.9/6 A18-49 rating/share).
  • 8:00 p.m.: A repeat of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (4.6/8 HH rating/share, 7.39M viewers, 2.4/7 A18-49 rating/share).
  • 9:00 p.m.: A repeat of Desperate Housewives (2.9/5 HH rating/share, 4.14M viewers, 1.5/4 A18-49 rating/share).
  • 10:00 p.m.: That was followed by a repeat of Brothers & Sisters (2.2/4 HH rating/share, 3.15M viewers, 1.1/3 A18-49 rating/share).

Fox followed in fourth place for the evening with a 2.8/5 household rating/share and 4.30 million viewers, but managed a tie for first place among adults 18-49 with a 2.1/6 rating/share.

  • Last Week:
    • 2.6/5 HH Rating [#4]
    • 4.38M Viewers [#4]
    • 2.0/6 A18-49 Rating [#2]
  • Fox again got great repeat numbers (in the A18-49 demo) from its core lineup of comedies, placing in a tie for first on the night in that demo. True, the 7:00 p.m. time period is still a drag, but the network will mostly be using the hour for comedy programming (both repeat and original) and NFL overruns during the Fall season. With that in mind, they should be fine.
  • 7:00 & 7:30 p.m.: Repeats of ‘Til Death (1.5/3 HH rating/share, 2.33M viewers, 1.0/3 A18-49 rating/share) and King of the Hill (1.6/3 HH rating/share, 2.70M viewers, 1.2/4 A18-49 rating/share).
  • 8:00 & 8:30 p.m.: Repeats of Simpsons (3.3/6 HH rating/share, 5.07M viewers, 2.4/7 A18-49 rating/share) and American Dad (3.0/5 HH rating/share, 4.50M viewers, 2.2/6 A18-49 rating/share).
  • 9:00 & 9:30 p.m.: Back-to-back repeats of Family Guy (3.7/6 HH rating/share, 5.60M viewers, 2.9/8 A18-49 rating/share).

The CW was left then in fifth place with a 0.8/1 household rating/share, 1.12 million viewers and a 0.4/1 rating/share among adults 18-49.

  • Last Week:
    • 0.7/1 HH Rating [#5]
    • 1.01M Viewers [#5]
    • 0.4/1 A18-49 Rating [#5]
  • The CW continues to perform very poorly on Sundays, with another sub 1 million performance from ‘Search for the Next Doll’ and the night on a whole just narrowly lifting itself over the 1 million mark.
  • 7:00 p.m.: A repeat of Smallville (0.8/2 HH rating/share, 1.19M viewers, 0.4/1 A18-49 rating/share).
  • 8:00 p.m.: A repeat of 7th Heaven (0.8/1 HH rating/share, 1.21M viewers, 0.3/1 A18-49 rating/share).
  • 9:00 p.m.: A repeat of Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll (0.7/1 HH rating/share, 971,000 viewers, 0.4/1 A18-49 rating/share).

Note: Network average numbers from the week prior are based on fast national data. Comparison’s from the week prior (or episode-to-episode, etc.) on specific shows are based on final national data. Ratings for the current day are based on fast nationals. (Expect all three scenarios to be the case at all times, unless otherwise noted). The final rating for first-run episodes that aired this evening will be reported the following week. So for example, the final rating for tonights episode of “60 Minutes” will be reported in next weeks report for Sunday, August 26, 2007.

Also keep in mind that because these are fast national ratings, numbers may increase or decrease when the final nationals are released.
